Amazon.com Hands-On Review For parents whose vocal cords can't hold out for 200 rounds of "Hush Little Baby," a sound machine is a must for baby bedtime routines. And the DEX Sound Sleeper is one of the best ones we've ever found. This small (6 by 10 by 12 inches), simple device features a high quality speaker, on/off or 60-minute timer switch, volume control, single, combine, or random mode, battery or power adapter capability, headphone jack (headphones not included), and, most spectacularly, 10 sound options which can be combined to make 24 sound combinations altogether. Doctors and sleep experts recommend a consistent, relaxing sleep routine for newborns and older babies. Freeing baby's sleep environment of jarring or distracting outside noises is an important step in creating a soothing space for sleep. The Sound Sleeper provides just enough peaceful background noise to block household hubbub. Once baby becomes familiar with the sounds of this machine, she'll probably start yawning the minute she hears it! The Sounds of (Near) Silence The sounds of Sound Sleeper don't have to be boring, just relaxing and repetitive. Experiment with the various sounds to find the perfect soporific. Summer Night The buzz of peeper frogs and insects is a happy, sleepy, country sound. Rain What's cozier than curling up in bed with a gentle rainstorm pattering outside the window? Brook Burble, burble, burblejust don't try this one when your toddler is potty-training! Ocean The deep tranquility of a calm ocean is unmatched for its lulling ability. Wind The wind blows quietly in the trees, but you and baby are safe and sound at home. Womb The rhythmic swishing sounds of the womb: it's a natural for soothing baby! Seagull Just a few lonely seagull cries, widely spaced. Bird Pretty, delicate bird song. Buoy The distant ringing of a bell buoy. Great in combination with the Ocean sound. Thunder Thunder rumbles, but the storm always stays far off in the distance. Best combined with Rain, of course. Experiment with the Combine mode to find the perfect sleep-inducing sounds for your baby. We like Brook and Bird, Wind and Thunder, and Ocean and Buoy, but who knows? Maybe the magic combination will be Womb and Seagull! The power adapter feature of the Sound Sleeper is very handy for everyday use, but the battery option is a lifesaver when traveling. The ability to leave the sound machine on all night long (or put it on the one-hour timer) is invaluable. Babies are notorious for waking up throughout the night; when they hear the same soothing sounds they fell asleep to, it will be much easier to return to those sweet dreams. Requires 4 AA batteries (not included). --Emilie Coulter

Poor Volume August 24, 2010 Leza C While it has a lot of variety in sounds it is NOT loud enough. Thankfully I only have to use it while traveling, but I'm looking for something else at this point.
Very nice sound machine August 12, 2010 S. Maksim (Maryland, USA) I bought this sound machine when my second daughter was a few months old. For our first daughter I had tried static on the radio (unreliable, was hard to get a station that was all static and never actually became voices/music, and even if I found a good one there was no guarantee that it would *stay* static) and making a CD with a white noise track (there was a "skip" at the end of each track and a longer pause when the CD went to repeat, plus our CD player became unreliable after a while). Finally I broke down and bought this white noise machine. I'm not sure why these cost so much, since they seem like they're so simple, but honestly, they're worth it.
We've been using it for almost 2 years at this point and I'm contemplating buying a new one for our expected baby, so that the toddler can continue to use it. It's great. It plugs into the wall, so you don't have to worry about batteries running out, but it does have a battery option for times when you need that.
Several reviewers have complained that it doesn't go loud enough, but that hasn't been at all our experience. You don't want it so loud that it causes hearing damage (not from being ultra loud but from being on all the time when they're sleeping, so that their ears don't get a chance to rest). I'll admit that it's not going to cover serious loud noises nearby, but at a certain point you would just need something so incredibly loud to do that that it wouldn't be worth it. It provides a very nice cover of noise.
The settings provided some nice variety. I found some, I think "rain," to be a little too high-pitched and irritating to me. "Rain" actually sounds more like static than rain. I use "rain," "brook," and "ocean" the most. "Ocean" is nice because the irregularity of the waves covers other irregular sounds. I'm not sure who would use the seagulls and buoys, but sometimes when my oldest wakes up in the morning she changes it to "the birdies," so they get some use that way.
All in all, a great little machine, and definitely worth it. It's reliable and functions exactly as it should.
Great Sounds August 9, 2010 Traci A. Feliu (Monmouth Junction, NJ, US) I was using a vaporizor for 18 months to keep out noise from my daughters room. Even in the balmy summer. This is a much better compact system that has the same "running water humming sound"
Need to push HARD on the volume buttons August 7, 2010 T. Mayer This sound machine bummed me out at first because it was so low. Once I started pushing super hard on the up volume it went to the desired level. It's weird though because I will turn it off and on and it goes down again even without touching the volume keys. I'm happy with it though because as long as I set it to the desired volume at night before bed it works great.
